About Zebra Rugs

What is a Zebra? Zebras are one of the most recognizable animals to humans, known for their signature stripes. These stripes are often black and white and sometimes in a more brownish hue, depending on the species. Zebras are social creatures that run in large herds for protection from predators, such as lions. Generally, a full grown Zebra is about 8 ft long (sometimes as large as 10 ft).

Zebras are wild animals that fall into three overall species: Plains Zebra, Grevy’s Zebra, and Mountain Zebra. Zebra primarily live in grasslands and savannas, but are also found in the mountains as well. While the Grevy’s Zebra and the Mountain Zebra are now endangered, the subspecies Bruchell is in abundance across most of the African continent.

There are two main misconceptions about Zebra:

Zebra are an Endangered Species
Fact: Plains Zebra (Bruchell) are not an endangered species. In fact, Zebras are quite commonly hunted and are a food source for carnivores of Africa. Good conservation of the species is of benefit to the species itself, to humans, and to the food chain that needs the Zebras.

Zebras are Farmed for their Hides
Fact: Zebras are not “farmed” or domesticated for their hides or for meat. Largely, the Zebra has remained un-domesticated. Zebras live natural lives in natural herds across the plains of Africa. Since they’re wild animals, this means finished hides have natural scarring, adding the natural, wild appeal of Zebra rugs. Zebra hides come in three grades: Grade A (Very little scarring on the pelt), Grade B (highly visible scarring on the pelt) and Grade C (very noticeable scaring, possible holes in sections of the pelt)
